Growing spiritually is just that...growth. Children are born with an innate sense of wonder and spiritual connection that is authentic and pure. Growing spiritually is not linear, but occurs through experiences, nurture, and love. Each child deserves a space to grow at their own pace, in their own context, with nurturing adults as their guides. I decided to write this guide based on my earlier writings because we live in a time of uncertainty, and our children deserve opportunities, resources, and experiences that will help ground them as we move through the uncertainty together. In equipping our children as disciples of Jesus Christ it is important that we provide opportunities for them to connect with others, resources that are interesting and age-appropriate, and experiences that will help them to make choices that align with who God created them to be. This guide is by no means a "how-to" or "must-do", but rather recommendations based on experience and research. Children are not monolithic, so they will be ready to engage scripture and grow spiritually at their own pace. Be Flexible. Be intentional. Be Open.

The Section on Spiritual Growth follows children from birth to eleven years old, and includes what children need for parents and ministers to provide, what children may be experiencing, and terms and images to refer to as they grow…no vocabulary quizzes, please!

The Section on Experiencing Scripture lists scripture that parents and pastors should share with children from birth to eleven years old. It is by no means a complete list, but allows for a comprehensive experience of scripture through the childhood years.

The guide includes a list of meaningful terms and inspirational images for parents and children’s ministers to keep in mind as they serve in ministry with children.
